Church Creeds

The Church Creeds or Creeds of Christendom are an interesting bit of history which reflect the progression of theological thought in the Christian church. Often times they are thought of as diabolical replacements for the Scriptures which only those out of tune with God would have anything to do. But, the church creeds are merely statements of belief, based on biblical precedent, that Christians held on a variety of subjects, many of which dealt with heretical attacks upon the Christian church when they were formulated.

For instance, one of the most vilified of the church creeds is known as the Nicene Creed. Frequently cited by those in the cults as something that is "man-made," and therefore to be shunned, the Nicene Creed is actually a response to anti-Trinitarian attacks which argued that Jesus was nothing more than a creature. What the Creed provided was a clear statement which declared not only Jesus' deity, but the kind of relationship that he shared with God the Father in the Godhead. Other creeds share similar arguments and teachings on other subjects.

Therefore, read and enjoy the Church Creeds. They were written by thoughtful, dedicated Christians, in a day when Christians literally died for what they believed. In them one will find not only what the minds of Christians were thinking, often at the risk of suffering persecution, but a subtle moving of the Spirit of God as it illumined the minds of Christians to understand God's revelation, the Bible. It does not mean that the creeds are inspired, but that they simply reflected the deep understanding of those who trusted in what the Spirit had inspired, namely God's revelation, the Bible.
