Why Atheists Wage War Against God: The Evidence
Paul Derengowski, ThM
Have you ever wondered why certain people spend an inordinate amount of effort railing against God? It is as if the hatred and anger is so intense that they actually take great joy in being hateful and angry, and their day just is not made until they have tried to lead someone else to rail against God as well.
Of course those vociferous little curmudgeons of society are otherwise known as atheists.
The Bible provides an answer to the question at hand, and in this particular article, we will look at the evidence of why the atheist is on a warpath against God.
Interestingly, aside from informing the reader about the atheist’s mental and spiritual attitude, the Bible debunks the notion that atheists are an objective reality. There are no real atheists, in other words. There are only STUs: Suppressors of Truth in Unrighteous.
Romans 1:18-19 tells us, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness [STU], 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.”
The first thing to be observed is that while the atheist may be upset with God, God is upset with the atheist as well. Why? Because God has revealed the truth about himself, particularly his wrath, but the atheist has chosen to unjustly (Gr. αδικια) suppress that revelation.
Suppression (Gr. κατεχόντων), in this particular context, implies the continuous and deliberate prevention of something—in this case, the truth—proceeding forward.
Such deliberate suppression of the truth implies that the plea for evidence that the atheist often makes for God’s existence is disingenuous. It is insincere. It is dishonest.
The atheist already has all the evidence he needs to recognize God’s reality, because God has made it “evident within [him]…” and “to [him].” Within his very being, the atheist knows God is there, even though the truth of that awareness is in the form of God’s wrath.
Of course, since God’s wrath has been revealed against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, which would include both acts of a physical and metaphysical nature, then (1) the evidence is overwhelming, and (2) only a STU would dare to irrationally deny it.
It is also a reason why arguing with an atheist about evidence is equally irrational. For if all he is going to do is willfully and continuously suppress the evidence, then it is pointless to continue to throw pearls before swine and let him trample upon them.
Therefore, in the quest to answer the question of why the atheist is at war against God, it is must first be understood that the atheist is an intentional, deliberate suppressor of the truth. He revels in a lie, despite evidence to the contrary. And because he revels in a lie, the natural progression necessarily leads to angry outbursts and aggression, which the Bible will address later.
