This morning I read a comment in reference to atheism that caused me to pause for a moment and think, “Could this be an additional reason why we see so much evil, corruption, and confusion in society today?”
Psalm 14:1 tells us, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.'”
The commentator went on to opine, “When the Scripture so chastens the atheist by calling him a ‘fool,’ it is making a moral judgment upon him. To be a fool in biblical terms is not to be dim-witted or lacking intelligence; it is to be immoral.”
That would mean that denying God’s existence is actually a moral judgment too.
Oh, the atheist may claim that his judgment is predicated on “science” or a lack of proof or evidence; but in reality that cannot be true, since many scientists, perhaps even a majority of them, believe in God’s existence.
No, the atheist has made a moral judgment out of his hatred of God, whom he knows exists (Rom. 1:18-ff.), and in return God has judged him to be morally “foolish.”
How does that make atheism the epitome of immorality, though?
While the practicing atheist does not always act out his atheism to its logical end—mainly because God and His grace will not allow it—the height of the atheist’s immorality is seen in final judgment, in hell, for eternity.
Ironically, there will be no outwardly professing atheists in hell.
That said, all immoral acts, whether they be murder, idolatry, lying, or theft are byproducts of stating outwardly or inwardly, “There is no God who will hold me accountable for my devilish deeds.”
So, the next time you turn on the news and witness a convenience store being robbed, hear of someone down the street being shot and killed, or listen to some politician speaking great swelling words of deceit, you now know where is it coming from.
Denying God’s existence is the epitome of all that is immoral in the world.
Only a fool would argue otherwise.
