What’s in the Mormon Name?

Ah, the tomfoolery of the Mormon leadership continues on, as it keeps its membership off-balance and the ignorant world enamored, using the silliest of stunts.

Recently, Mormon President Russell Nelson had a vision—a vision of undoing nearly two centuries of Mormon tradition of being known as the Mormon Church. Now, it’s officially The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

No more nicknames, emphasized Nelson, even though Mormon is a main character in the development of the Mormon religion with his name plastered on the front cover of the book that the Mormons esteem more highly than the Bible: The Book of Mormon.

“It is a correction,” stated Nelson during the most recent General Conference. It is something that Jesus Christ ordered and it “is not negotiable,” even though there is no record of Jesus naming his church in the Bible.

That Bible is such a pesky thing.

But, what’s in a name, anyway? Well, at least according to Nelson, “Everything!”

But, if that was true, then why do we not see The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints found anywhere but in Mormonism?

In the Bible we see specifically, defined by locale, “the church in [at] Jerusalem” (Acts 8:1; 11:22; 15:4), “the church” [at Antioch] (Acts 13:1), “the church [at Caesarea] (Acts 18:22), “the church…at Cenchrea” (Rom. 16:1), “the church of God…at Corinth” (1 Cor. 1:2; 2 Cor. 1:1), “churches of Galatia” (1 Cor. 16:1), “the churches of Asia” (1 Cor. 16:19), “the churches of Macedonia” (2 Cor. 8:1), “churches of Judea” (Gal. 1:22), “the church of the Laodiceans” (Col. 4:16 cf. Rev. 3:14), “the church of the Thessalonians” (1 Thess. 1:1; 2 Thess. 1:1), “the churches…in Asia” (Rev. 1:4), “the church in Ephesus” (Rev. 2:1), “the church in Smyrna” (Rev. 2:8), “the church in Pergamum” (Rev. 2:12), “the church in Thyatira” (Rev. 2:18), “the church in Sardis” (Rev. 3:1), and “the church in Philadelphia” (Rev. 3:7).

Elsewhere, the Christian is church is more generally labeled “My church” (Mt. 16:18), “the church” (Mt. 18:17; Acts 8:3; 9:31; 11:26; 12:1, 5; 14:27; 15:3; 20:17; 1 Cor. 6:4; 12:28; 14:4, 5, 12, 19, 28; Eph. 1:22; 3:10, 21; 5:23-25, 27, 29, 32; Phil. 3:6; Col. 1:18, 24; 1 Tim. 5:16; Jam. 5:14; 3 Jn. 6, 9, 10), “the church of God” (Acts 20:28; 10:32; 11:22; 15:9; 1 Cor. 10:32; 11:22; 15:9; Gal. 1:13; 1 Tim. 3:5), “the churches of Christ” (Rom. 16:16), “the church of the living God” (1 Tim. 3:15), “the churches of God” (1 Cor. 11:16; 2 Thess. 1:4) “whole church” (Acts 5:11; 15:22; Rom. 16:23; 1 Cor. 14:23), “every church” (Acts 14:23), “the churches” (Acts 15:41; 16:5; 1 Cor. 7:17; Rev. 2:7, 11, 17, 23, 29; 3:6, 13, 22; 22:16), “the churches of the Gentiles” (Rom. 16:4), “the church that is in their house” (Rom. 16:5; 1 Cor. 16:19), “every church” (1 Cor. 4:17), “a church” (1 Cor. 11:18), “the churches of the saints” (1 Cor. 14:33), “the churches” (1 Cor. 14:34; 2 Cor. 8:18, 19, 23, 24; 11:8, 28; 12:13), “no church” (Phil. 4:15), “the church that is in her house” (Col. 4:15), “the church in your house,” (Phm. 2), “church of the firstborn” (Heb. 12:23), and “seven churches” (Rev. 1:11, 20(2x)

Nowhere, at anytime, is the Christian church labeled “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” Now, one would think that with all that has been revealed about the church in the Bible, both specifically and generally, someone would have thought of such a laborious designation. Such is not the case, though.

Frankly, I think the whole name manipulation by the current Mormon President has nothing to do with Jesus ordering him to “correct” anything, since the biblical Jesus has nothing to do with Mormonism. It has to do with fear and arrogance.

President Nelson is afraid of people searching and finding information about the church that he knows has caused irreparable damage to the Mormon cult. He even mentions the “digital world” and “search engine optimization” in his speech before the Mormon faithful, both of which deal with the Internet.

The Internet is the Mormon’s biggest nightmare. All it takes is a few key strokes to pull up information about Mormonism, its history and doctrines, that makes the naive and not fully indoctrinated Mormon to blush and cower in despair.

However, change a few tags and meta data that Internet search engines rely on to find certain information relative to the key words that a researcher is inquiring about and voila! Different results pop up that might not otherwise be found by using the traditional terms associated with the search. Nelson and the Mormons know this, being technically savvy regarding the Internet.

That stated, Nelson, like all Mormons, is as arrogant as it comes when it comes to his imposture. He believes that the Mormon Church is “the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth” (D&C 1:30), while all other churches are “of the devil…which is the mother of abominations; and she is the whore of all the earth” (1 Nephi 14:10).

The late Mormon apostle, Bruce R. McConkie even went so far as to assert, “If it had not been for Joseph Smith and the restoration, there would be no salvation. There is no salvation outside The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” (Mormon Doctrine, 670).

Interestingly, McConkie credited former Mormon President, Joseph Fielding Smith, for his haughty claim, by citing his magnum opus Doctrines of Salvation, vol 2. pp. 1-350. In that particular volume Smith argued that salvation was predicated on legalistic and meritorious effort. “Man must be redeemed according law,” wrote Smith, “and his reward must be based on the law of justice. Because of this, the Lord will not give unto men that which they do not merit, but shall reward all men according to their works” (2.27).

That being the case, then no one would be saved, for as the apostle Paul wrote, “Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may become accountable to God; (20) because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law is the knowledge of sin” (Rom. 3:19-20). Elsewhere, Paul wrote, “I do not nullify the grace of God; for if righteousness is through the Law, then Christ died needlessly” (Gal. 2:21).

So, the whole “issue” that Nelson believes is so important is really nothing more than smoke and mirrors. The name “correction” has nothing to do with something Jesus revealed, since there is no biblical precedent for it.

Instead, we know that Satan—who is Jesus’ “spirit-brother in Mormon lore—is all about lying and deception, and is the consummate coward, then it would be better to conclude that he is behind the Mormon President’s deceitful declaration rather than Jesus.

And while many of the Mormon faithful, along with a fair amount of those in the world, will be caught up in the Mormon ruse, all it takes a casual reading of the Bible to recognize the ruse for what it is and then counter it with what God has revealed or something that The Church of Satan’s Brother, the Mormon Jesus, absolutely hates to hear.
