Ford-Kavanaugh Spectacle

Paul Derengowski, Ph.D.

Proverbs 12:17 tells us, “He who speaks truth tells what is right, but a false witness, deceit.” That is what should be kept in mind when considering the “spectacle” that took place yesterday at Senate hearings over the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

It was a he-said versus she-said showdown between Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Kavanaugh that was initiated after the Senate hearings concluded last week when a letter she had written accusing Kavanaugh of attempted rape or sexual assault suddenly surfaced.

For seven weeks Senator Diane Feinstein of California had harbored the letter. Then, when Kavanaugh’s confirmation seemed all but sure, Feinstein produced the letter and brought the proceedings to a screeching halt with calls for FBI investigations into not only the rape accusation, but other salacious details regarding other accusers, unrelated to Ford, that decided to pile-on.

The showdown between Ford and Kavanaugh began at 10 a.m. Eastern Time and lasted until 7 p.m. that evening. In between, she told her story of alleged criminal activity that occurred 36 years ago—when they were in High School! He vehemently denied any such event ever took place. Both were credited with their performances, when the reality was, one of them lied and only the naive would conclude otherwise.

Dr. Christine Blasey-Ford

Dr. Ford went first and came off sounding like dopey, immature, 12 year-old, even though she teaches at Stanford University. She spun a tale that provided no corroborative evidence and lots of emotive fluff.

While at a party with Kavanaugh, when she was 15 years-old, in Maryland, supposedly she went upstairs to use the restroom and Kavanaugh and a friend (Mark Judge) followed her.

They surprised her by pushing into a bedroom, wrestled to the bed, where Kavanaugh groped her. In her words, “he was going to rape me” and she thought he was going to “accidentally kill me.”

After falling off the bed, she fled to the safety of the bathroom and she subsequently escaped the house.

Again, Ford provided absolutely zero corroborating evidence to substantiate her accusation. Moreover, the witnesses she cited as being at the party, including a best friend, all signed affidavits under the penalty of committing a felony, denied her testimony.

She could not provide information how she got to the party, how she got home after leaving the party, which included who picked her up or whether she walked home. It is a lacuna that only served to discredit her.

After four hours of some rather weak questioning by a specially hired prosecutor (Rachel Mitchell)—the Republicans brought her onboard to avoid the appearance of insensitivity or sexism—as well as the expected obsequious behavior by the Democrats, Ford left the room, while her legal team took their seats three rows behind the witness table.

That is when Judge Kavanaugh took his place to give his side of the story. It is also when the real fireworks began.

For roughly the first 50 minutes, Judge Kavanaugh read a script he had produced on his own the previous day and night that was absolutely riveting. Dr. Ford’s personal statement lasted about 15 minutes and paled by comparison.

In an interview that Judge Kavanaugh gave earlier in the week to Martha McCallum at FOX News, I thought to myself, This guy is a not-so-well-rehearsed robot, as he kept repeating the same thing over and over and over again. He just seemed shallow and unbelievable.

Roll the clock ahead a few days and we all saw a completely different person. He was a real human being with a compelling testimony that exuded raw, heart-felt, emotion. While giving his statement, he kept taking so many drinks of water, as he fought back the tears, that a person had to wonder, Is someone going to have to bring him another bottle?

What brought me to tears, though, was when he testified that he had no ill-will toward the very person who had libeled and slandered him. It was his subsequent words about his 10 year-old daughter’s prayer that momentarily broke me.

When Judge Kavanaugh was done, then came the additional efforts to smear him, if not trick him. The mantra of requesting an FBI investigation was parroted by several of the Democrats, even though they knew of the six, previous, thorough, FBI investigations conducted into Kavanaugh’s life. “Sham” was probably the best way to describe the Democratic deceit, then, and continues to be this very moment.

Above all, what made Judge Kavanaugh’s defense compelling was the details he included, whether in written form or in his answers to senators. In fact, it was almost comedic, if not ridiculous, at times the level he had to stoop to explain High School terms about “farting” to those who were fishing for something, anything, they could use to smear him. Why? Because Dr. Ford’s testimony was not compelling.

At the end of the day, although some thought both Ford and Kavanaugh were “credible,” it became obvious that that could not be true. To be credible means that one is believable and to be believable, especially when two stories about the same event collide with each other, is when the truth is being told.

Both Ford and Kavanaugh could not be telling the truth at the same time, given that she claimed with “one-hundred percent” certainty that he attempted to rape and kill her, while he denied the charge without hesitation. One of them lied.

Given the hours of bare-naked testimony it was clear to me that Dr. Christine Blasey-Ford was a liar and Judge Brett Kavanaugh told the truth.

Only two verses removed from Proverbs 12:17 are these words of wisdom, “Truthful lips will be established forever, but a lying tongue is only for a moment” (Prov. 12:19).

Here is hoping that Judge Kavanaugh’s truthfulness will at least last his lifetime on the Supreme Court bench, while Dr. Ford quickly fades into obscurity, never to be heard from again.
